Real Madrid Declares War on LaLiga Chief After Nazi Propaganda Row, But Tebas Is Not Backing Down

Real Madrid has demanded the immediate resignation of LaLiga president Javier Tebas following a controversial comparison between the Spanish football club’s media strategy and the Nazi propaganda methods associated with Joseph Goebbels, triggering another major confrontation in Spanish football.

The dispute erupted on October 16 after Tebas criticized Real Madrid’s management and its official television channel, Real Madrid TV, over their coverage of refereeing decisions and repeated allegations of unfair treatment against the club.

In a lengthy statement published on social media platform X, Tebas accused Real Madrid’s leadership of directing what he described as an organized network of supportive voices, with Real Madrid TV playing a leading role in promoting the club’s complaints.

He argued that the channel repeatedly highlights controversial refereeing decisions, reinforces claims of injustice and creates suspicion surrounding match officials while overlooking incidents that could challenge the club’s position.

Tebas then made the comparison that sparked the controversy, saying the communication strategy reminded him of propaganda techniques used by Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Germany’s minister of propaganda during World War II.

However, Tebas clarified that his comparison referred specifically to propaganda techniques, including repetition and the construction of perceived enemies, rather than Nazi ideology or Real Madrid supporters.

Real Madrid strongly rejected the remarks, describing them as deeply offensive, unacceptable and incompatible with the responsibilities of someone holding senior positions in Spanish football.

In an official statement, the club accused Tebas of repeatedly targeting Real Madrid, its president and its media operations. It argued that his latest comments demonstrated a serious lack of neutrality, respect and impartiality.

The Spanish giants also maintained that the LaLiga president had crossed an institutional line by associating the club’s communications strategy with Nazi propaganda, even after clarifying the intended meaning of his comparison.

Real Madrid subsequently demanded Tebas’ immediate resignation not only as president of LaLiga but also as vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

The club also renewed its calls for major reforms within Spanish football, particularly concerning the refereeing system and the institutions responsible for overseeing the sport.

Another major issue raised by Real Madrid was the ongoing Negreira case, involving payments made by FC Barcelona to companies linked to former Spanish refereeing official José María Enríquez Negreira.

Real Madrid has repeatedly called for greater transparency and a comprehensive investigation into those payments, which have become one of the most controversial issues in Spanish football. Barcelona has denied wrongdoing, while the legal proceedings have continued to attract significant attention.

The club argued that Tebas should be focusing on ensuring transparency and restoring confidence in Spanish football rather than publicly attacking Real Madrid and its media operations.

The latest confrontation also follows an earlier dispute in September, when Real Madrid called for a change in LaLiga leadership after Tebas criticized the club’s complaints about refereeing following its 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

According to international reports, Tebas responded to Real Madrid’s latest demand by rejecting the criticism and arguing that the club had repeatedly attempted to force his departure during his tenure. He also defended LaLiga’s handling of the Negreira case and accused the club of using pressure tactics against the league’s leadership.

Tebas has been president of LaLiga since 2013 and was re-elected unopposed in 2023 for another term running until 2027. His position is determined through the league’s professional clubs, meaning Real Madrid’s demand does not automatically result in his removal.

The controversy is particularly significant because Real Madrid remains one of the most influential clubs in world football, while LaLiga is responsible for overseeing Spain’s top professional football competitions.

The dispute also highlights the increasingly strained relationship between the club and the organization responsible for managing Spanish domestic football, with disagreements over refereeing, governance, media coverage and institutional independence continuing to fuel tensions.

For now, Real Madrid is standing by its demand for Tebas to step down, while the LaLiga president has shown no indication that he intends to surrender his position.

The latest exchange threatens to deepen divisions within Spanish football, raising further questions about whether the conflict can be resolved without wider consequences for the league’s leadership and credibility.
