Loh Kean Yew Stuns World No. 1 Jonatan Christie to Secure Historic Asian Games Medal

Singapore badminton star Loh Kean Yew has secured a historic Asian Games medal after defeating Indonesia’s world No. 1 Jonatan Christie in the men’s singles quarter-finals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.

The 29-year-old world No. 13 defeated Christie 21-14, 21-19 at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium on Sept. 27, ending an 11-match losing head-to-head record against the Indonesian.

The victory guarantees Loh at least a bronze medal because there is no bronze-medal playoff in the competition. Both players who lose their semi-final matches are awarded bronze.

Loh’s breakthrough makes him the first Singaporean badminton player to win an individual Asian Games medal. Singapore’s only previous badminton medal at the Games came in 2006, when the women’s team won bronze in Doha.

The match was closely contested early on, with Loh holding an 11-10 lead at the first interval before gradually pulling away to take the opening game 21-14.

Christie responded strongly in the second game and moved ahead 18-16 after Loh had established an 11-6 advantage. The Singaporean, however, produced a late run to close out the match in straight games.

The result also marks a significant turnaround for Loh at the Asian Games. At his previous appearance in China three years ago, he failed to win a match in either the men’s singles or team event.

His 2026 season had also been interrupted by an abdominal injury sustained in June. He subsequently struggled to advance beyond the last 16 in several tournaments before arriving in Japan for the Asian Games.

Loh had already overcome India’s world No. 14 Lakshya Sen in the round of 32 before defeating Malaysia’s world No. 48 Justin Hoh in the last 16. His victory over Christie now puts him into the semi-finals, where he will face either Japan’s world No. 7 Kodai Naraoka or South Korea’s world No. 46 Yoo Tae-bin.

Christie’s defeat ends the Asian Games singles campaign of the 2018 champion and current world No. 1. He had also struggled during the men’s team competition, where Indonesia nevertheless went on to win the team gold.

For Loh, the medal represents another major milestone in a career that already includes the 2021 world championship title, two silver and one bronze SEA Games medals, two Asia Championships medals and an Olympic quarter-final appearance.

Loh celebrated his quarter-final victory with one of his familiar references to Monkey D. Luffy, the main character from the manga and anime series One Piece. He has used the character’s poses throughout the tournament as a personal celebration after his victories.

With a medal already secured, Loh now turns his attention to the semi-finals and an opportunity to advance to the gold-medal match. Whatever happens in the next round, his victory over Christie has already given Singapore its first individual Asian Games badminton medal.
