Lionel Richie is set to return to the American Idol judging panel for the show’s 25th season, just days after undergoing a heart procedure that forced him to step back from his concert schedule.
The 77-year-old singer confirmed his return during a virtual appearance at Luke Bryan’s concert in Nashville on Sept. 24. Bryan and Carrie Underwood joined Richie in announcing that the trio will return for the upcoming season, with Ryan Seacrest also coming back as host.
The announcement comes after Richie underwent a procedure for atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm. His representative said the procedure went well and that Richie was doing well but would take some time away from performing while he recovered.
Richie’s health concerns had already affected his 2026 touring schedule. He postponed performances earlier this year after experiencing dizziness onstage and was hospitalized again in August following a concert in St. Louis, where he underwent additional cardiac testing.
The latest procedure also led to changes in his joint tour with Earth, Wind & Fire. Performances scheduled for San Francisco on Sept. 26, Chicago on Sept. 30 and Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 2 were canceled or postponed, with reports differing on the status of replacement dates.
Despite the interruption, Richie has indicated that he intends to return to the stage. He is also expected to resume his Las Vegas residency in October, although his recovery remains the immediate priority.
Richie has been part of American Idol’s judging panel alongside Luke Bryan since 2018. Carrie Underwood joined the panel in 2025 after previously winning the competition’s fourth season.
The upcoming 25th season is scheduled to air in 2027. The return of Richie, Bryan, Underwood and Seacrest keeps the show’s current judging and hosting lineup intact as the competition prepares for another season.
For Richie, the announcement provides a significant career update following a difficult stretch on the road. While he continues to recover from his recent heart procedure, his return to American Idol gives fans a look at what could be his next major television appearance.
