Ed Sheeran has broken his silence on the Gaza war, describing the situation facing Palestinians as “catastrophic,” “unjustifiable” and “disproportionate” during his first concert since a growing controversy over the removal of rapper Macklemore from his North American tour.
Speaking to thousands of fans at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 19, the British pop star said he could no longer hide how he felt about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
“My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives,” Sheeran said, according to Reuters and other reports from the concert.
His comments marked a significant shift from his earlier position that his concerts should remain spaces for music, unity and escapism rather than political debate.
But Sheeran’s remarks were also accompanied by an apology over the controversy that has engulfed his U.S. tour.
“I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions and I am making mistakes and I’m so, so sorry,” he told the Philadelphia audience.
Sheeran condemns Hamas attack — while criticizing Israel’s response
Sheeran sought to make clear that his criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza did not erase his condemnation of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.
He described the attack, which killed about 1,200 people in Israel, as horrific.
But he then sharply criticized the Israeli military campaign that followed, describing what has happened in Gaza as catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate.
He also raised concerns about what he described as systemic injustice in the West Bank, where Israeli settlements have continued to expand.
The remarks put Sheeran among a growing number of major artists who have publicly addressed the humanitarian consequences of the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
The issue is particularly sensitive for Sheeran because the remarks came amid an extraordinary dispute involving one of the artists who had been scheduled to perform alongside him.
The Macklemore controversy that triggered the backlash
The latest controversy began after Macklemore spoke in support of Palestinians during a September 4 performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The rapper told concertgoers to say “Free Palestine” and spoke about Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Macklemore had been scheduled to appear at several remaining dates on Sheeran’s U.S. tour.
He was subsequently removed from the lineup after venue owners and tour organizers objected to his political remarks. Sheeran has repeatedly said the decision was made by the promoter rather than by him.
That explanation, however, did little to stop the controversy.
Several other performers associated with Sheeran’s tour subsequently withdrew in solidarity with Macklemore, turning what began as a dispute over an opening act into a much wider debate about artistic freedom, political expression and the influence of concert venues and promoters.
Reuters reported that supporting acts including Finneas, Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe withdrew, while members of Sheeran’s touring band also stepped away.
Sheeran says he tried to find a solution
Earlier in the week, Sheeran said he had attempted to mediate between the various parties involved in the dispute.
He maintained that he did not want his concerts to become political forums and said his goal had always been to create shows centered on unity, joy and music.
In a statement reported by the Guardian and Reuters, Sheeran said he was “not complicit” in the decision to remove Macklemore and that he had personal views on the conflict even though he had previously chosen not to express them publicly.
That position changed considerably when he walked onto the Philadelphia stage.
Rather than avoiding the subject, Sheeran directly addressed Gaza and acknowledged the suffering of civilians and children.
Philadelphia concert becomes a flashpoint
The controversy was visible outside the stadium as well.
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered near Lincoln Financial Field before Sheeran’s performance, with protesters seeking to draw attention to conditions in Gaza.
Some fans attending the concert said they wanted the event to remain focused on music, while others argued that artists have a responsibility to speak about humanitarian issues.
The competing reactions illustrate the increasingly difficult position facing musicians whose concerts have become platforms for debates over international conflicts.
Gaza remains at the center of the humanitarian crisis
Sheeran’s remarks come as Gaza continues to face severe humanitarian challenges.
A September 4 United Nations humanitarian report said most of Gaza’s approximately 2.1 million people were approaching the rainy season while living in overcrowded displacement sites, with flooding and disease risks compounded by shortages in humanitarian funding and access restrictions.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has also continued to document civilian casualties and displacement, while emphasizing that figures supplied by authorities in the conflict are not independently verified by the UN in every instance.
Reuters reported on September 19 that more than 73,000 Palestinians had been killed since the beginning of the conflict, citing Palestinian authorities, while noting that violence has continued despite a ceasefire agreement reached the previous year.
The humanitarian situation has therefore remained a major international issue even as diplomatic efforts have sought to maintain the ceasefire and address questions surrounding Gaza’s reconstruction and security.
Macklemore escalates the issue in another direction
Macklemore has also responded to his removal from the tour by redirecting attention toward humanitarian assistance.
The rapper announced that he would donate $1 million from his earnings from the Sheeran tour to Palestinian relief organizations.
According to the Associated Press, recipients include Medical Aid for Palestinians, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund and UNRWA.
The announcement further transformed the dispute from a disagreement between performers into a broader conversation about the role of celebrities, political speech and humanitarian fundraising.
A dramatic change in Sheeran’s public position
Perhaps the most striking element of Saturday night’s performance was not simply Sheeran’s criticism of the situation in Gaza, but how dramatically it contrasted with his earlier approach.
Only days earlier, the singer had emphasized that audiences came to his concerts for music rather than political debate.
Now, he was standing onstage discussing the suffering of Palestinians, apologizing for decisions surrounding Macklemore and acknowledging that his own handling of the controversy had caused hurt.
CNA reported that Sheeran said he had been deeply affected by the devastation and loss of civilian and children’s lives and also criticized what he described as systemic injustice in the West Bank.
His intervention does not resolve the dispute over Macklemore’s removal.
Instead, it has opened another chapter in a controversy that now reaches far beyond one concert tour.
For Sheeran, the question is no longer simply whether his shows should remain politically neutral.
His Philadelphia speech has made clear that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has become an issue he is willing to discuss publicly — even as he continues to insist that his broader goal is to use music to bring people together.
And with more dates remaining on his North American tour, the reaction to those comments is likely to follow him onto the next stage.
