Fifteen hawker centres across Singapore will temporarily close between Sept. 28 and Oct. 4 for scheduled cleaning, affecting popular food destinations including Chomp Chomp Food Centre, ABC Brickworks Market and Food Centre, and Old Airport Road Food Centre.
The closures will last between one and five days, depending on the centre. The regular cleaning programme is part of efforts to maintain cleanliness and hygiene at Singapore’s hawker centres.
Chomp Chomp Food Centre and Toa Payoh Lorong 4 Block 93 will close on Sept. 28. Several other centres, including Cheng San Market and Cooked Food Centre, Circuit Road Block 79/79A, Clementi Avenue 3 Block 448, ABC Brickworks and 50A Marine Terrace, will close from Sept. 28 to 29.
Other affected locations include Telok Blangah Crescent Block 11, Beo Crescent Market, Punggol Coast Hawker Centre and Albert Centre at Queen Street. These centres are scheduled to remain closed through Sept. 29 or Sept. 30, depending on the location.
The longest closures among the 15 centres include Old Airport Road Food Centre and Shopping Mall, which will close from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, while 85 Fengshan Centre, Bedok Reservoir Road Block 630 and Tampines Round Market and Food Centre will close from Sept. 28 to Oct. 2.
The cleaning schedule comes as Singapore continues efforts to maintain hygiene standards across its network of markets and hawker centres. The national agency responsible for hawker-centre management oversees 123 markets and hawker centres across the island and publishes scheduled closure dates for cleaning and other works.
The temporary shutdowns are separate from longer repair and refurbishment projects. Changi Village Blocks 2 and 3, for example, are scheduled for repairs and redecoration from Oct. 10 to 15, while Kim Keat Palm Market and Food Centre and Block 726 Clementi West Street 2 are undergoing longer-term works.
For diners, the closures mean some familiar food spots will be unavailable during the specified dates, although the affected centres will reopen after their scheduled cleaning periods.
With 15 centres temporarily shutting their doors at the same time, diners planning meals during the first week of October may want to check the closure schedule before heading to their usual hawker centre.
