South Korean filmmaker Park Hoon-jung is gaining fresh international attention after his latest action noir, “Tristes Tropiques,” captured the Nouveau Genre Grand Prize, the highest honor in the international competition at the 32nd L’Étrange Festival in Paris.
According to international distributor Finecut, the film competed at the French genre festival, which ran from September 1 to 12, 2026, before emerging with the competition’s top prize. The latest victory adds another major international accolade to the film’s growing festival run.
A growing European festival run
“Tristes Tropiques” had already established a strong presence on the international genre-film circuit before its Paris victory.
The film previously received a Silver Raven in the international competition at the 44th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF) in April. It was also selected for the Òrbita section of the 58th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia and later invited to Germany’s Fantasy Filmfest, which is regarded as one of the country’s major genre-film events.
The Brussels recognition was particularly notable because “Tristes Tropiques” was the only Korean film in that year’s BIFFF international competition. It shared the Silver Raven with Matt Johnson’s “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie.”
What is “Tristes Tropiques” about?
The 107-minute film is described as a hard-boiled action noir centered on a group of children raised to become killers within an organization called Tristes Tropiques, led by a powerful figure named Sabu in a tropical rainforest.
When a mysterious incident threatens the group’s existence, distrust spreads among its members, setting off a cycle of suspicion, conflict and revenge.
International programmer Marc Trunen praised the film’s escalating intensity, comparing its structure to an opera. He also highlighted the combination of stylized action, a rough visual sensibility and melancholy, saying it recalls elements of Hong Kong cinema from the 1980s and 1990s.
Another international milestone for Park Hoon-jung
The French victory adds to Park Hoon-jung’s reputation as a filmmaker associated with hard-edged crime and genre cinema.
His previous directing credits include “New World,” “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion,” “V.I.P.” and “Night in Paradise.” “Tristes Tropiques” continues his focus on intense genre storytelling while bringing the filmmaker back into the international festival spotlight.
The film has also attracted international sales attention. Variety reported earlier this year that Korean sales company Finecut had secured presale deals for the movie in several territories ahead of its Cannes market presentation.
With its Brussels award, Sitges selection, Fantasy Filmfest invitation and now the top prize at L’Étrange Festival, “Tristes Tropiques” is building a notable international festival track record ahead of its South Korean theatrical release.
The domestic release is expected later in 2026, following completion of post-production.
